Currently in its fifth year, the CalHealthCares physician and dentist loan repayment program, is preparing to graduate the initial cohort of awardees from their final service year. At the conclusion of this cohort’s final review, it is anticipated that a total of $56.9 million in award disbursements will have been provided to alleviate the burden of educational loan debt.
In total, the program has 1,240 active awardees representing five cohorts. This includes 1,066 physicians and 174 dentists working to expand access to care for Medi-Cal beneficiaries. As of early June 2024, awardee disbursements totaling $111.6 million have been issued to CalHealthCares awardees.
The California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) is working to access additional program funding to provide continued participation opportunities for eligible physicians and dentists. Upon confirmation, upcoming application opportunities will be announced on calhealthcares.org.
