Dr. Ted and Marcy Mazer Award for Leadership, Mentorship and Advocacy

A new award from Physicians for a Healthy California and the California Medical Association supporting the next generation of physician leaders. Funded through a generous gift from Ted Mazer, M.D., and his wife Marcy Mazer, the award provides up to $2,500 annually to medical students, residents, early-career physicians, and programs that demonstrate a commitment to leadership, mentorship and advocacy on behalf of physicians and patients. Applications open July 1, 2026.


Health Equity Leadership Awards

Robert D. Sparks, M.D., Leadership Award
Recognizes an individual or organization that has demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication to improving community health in alignment with PHC's mission. Established in honor of PHC's first President and CEO, the award celebrates collaborative efforts that advance health equity and strengthen communities.

Adarsh S. Mahal, M.D., Access to Health Care and Disparities Award
Honors an individual or organization whose work has made a significant impact on improving access to health care or reducing health disparities in California. Established in memory of Adarsh S. Mahal, M.D., the award recognizes innovative and sustained efforts to advance equitable care.

Frank E. Staggers Sr., M.D., Outstanding Ethnic Physician Organization Award
Recognizes an ethnic physician organization that has made outstanding contributions to improving community health and reducing health disparities. Named for NEPO co-founder Frank E. Staggers Sr., M.D., the award honors organizations that champion physician leadership, advocacy and health equity.

Diverse Physician Leadership Award
Honors a physician whose leadership has made a meaningful impact in diverse communities. The award recognizes physicians who exemplify compassion, service and a commitment to advancing community health and health equity.

California Medical Student Health Equity Leadership Award
Recognizes a California medical student who has demonstrated a strong commitment to health equity and leadership. The award highlights emerging physician leaders whose work reflects PHC's mission to improve community health and advance health equity.

California Resident Health Equity Leadership Award
Honors a California resident or fellow who has demonstrated exceptional leadership in advancing health equity and addressing barriers to care. The award recognizes emerging physician leaders whose work is improving the health of underserved communities.

California Young Physician Health Equity Leadership Award
Recognizes a physician within five years of completing residency or fellowship whose work has advanced health equity, improved access to care or reduced health disparities in California. The award celebrates early-career physicians who are leading efforts to create a more equitable health care system.
