PHC working to ensure GME programs are fully funded in the state budget

In alignment with Physicians for a Healthy California’s (PHC) mission, our team has been working tirelessly to ensure that programs for graduate medical education (GME) are fully funded in the state budget, especially those in underserved regions of California.
The Governor’s revised 2024-25 budget proposes to eliminate $75 million for GME this fiscal year from the Managed Care Organization (MCO) tax deal made last summer. He also proposes reductions to CalMedForce to eliminate $13.5 million in FY 2024-25 and $14.3 million in FY 2025-26 from the General Fund to backfill declining tobacco tax revenue.
Thank you to all of you who heeded our call to contact your legislators to urge them to reinstate the MCO funds in the state budget to ensure that CalMedForce and other GME programs receive full funding. To date, over 600 letters have been sent to state legislators from residents, representatives of GME programs and other GME stakeholders.
With a shortage of over 10,000 physicians predicted in California by 2030, this type of advocacy is critical to ensure that Californians are able to receive high-quality, affordable and timely care where and when they need it.
