Association of Black Women Physicians honored by PHC
September 29,
2022By Physicians for a Healthy California Leadership Awards
Each year, the Frank E. Staggers, Sr., M.D., Outstanding Ethnic Physician Organization Award is given by Physicians for a Healthy California (PHC) to an ethnic physician organization that has taken significant action in improving the health of their communities, engaging physicians to be community advocates and reducing health disparities.
The 2022 award is given to Cozzette Lyons-Jones, M.D., MPH, FACP, in her role as president of the Association of Black Women Physicians (ABWP), a nonprofit organization established in 1982 focused on closing health disparities gaps through community education, professional support of women physicians of color and mentoring future Black doctors. As president, Dr. Lyons-Jones prioritized strengthening the pipeline of rising doctors of color, championing ABWP's Mentor Match Program under its popular Sister-2-Sister program.
Dr. Lyons-Jones is the Chief of Adult Medicine at Watts Healthcare Corporation, where she has made invaluable contributions toward eliminating barriers to accessing health care during the pandemic. In partnership with grassroots organization This Is Our Shot, Dr. Lyons-Jones served as a subject matter expert in webinars that addressed COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy, particularly among communities of color.
